Right-wing extremism in social work at the UAS Kiel
2009/2010
In the winter semester of 2014/2015, we made a quantitative survey on the frequency of right-wing extremist views at the Faculty of Social Work and Health within the context of the lecture “Racism and Youth Work”. The seminar participants worked intensively with the right-wing extremism questionnaire of the so-called middle studies of the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (Decker/Brähler and others) and the research on group-related misanthropy (Heitmeyer and others). Core questions of the teaching/research project were in what sense students of social work imagine themselves free from right-wing extremist views and how relevant the reflection of one’s own position is for professional social work. The results were presented within a lecture series.

Within the lecture “Gardening” which has been offered regularly since the WS of 2014/2015, students develop concepts and methods to integrate gardening projects in youth work. The ideas were put into practice and documented. A publication of the results is planned in 2015/2016.
Socio-spatial appropriation and subject formation – What role does youth welfare play?
Duration: March 2009 - December 2010
Cooperation: Jugendtreff Nord (youth club), Amt für Schule (office of schools), children and youth institutions of the City of Kiel, students from the Faculty of Social Work and Health
In this project, we investigate the question of which forms of socio-spatial appropriation youths of the district of Kiel Wik use to expand their scope of action and what elements of subject formation they already use or wish for – especially from youth welfare institutions.
For that, we will conduct qualitative interviews with young people from the district to reconstruct what leisure activities they are involved in, what they wish for and if and for what reasons they know the Jugendtreff Nord and if they visit it.
From the results of that qualitative analysis, we will develop a quantitative questionnaire to obtain a wider empirical basis to make conclusions for conceptual extensions of the youth club.
