Institute for Materials and Surfaces
The Institute for Materials and Surfaces at the Fachhochschule Kiel studies application-oriented materials and material properties.
The focus is on
- Plastics:
- Ageing phenomena in polymers
- Recycling options for polymer materials
- Investigation of the structure-property relationships of polymer materials
- Metallic materials:
- Metallic materials from additive manufacturing, e.g. functionally graded materials
- Corrosion analysis, in particular offshore corrosion
- Material resistance in the field of energy technology
In our research and development projects we are open to cooperation with external partners. Working together with companies is particularly important to us.
The institute has extensively equipped laboratories for preparation, characterization and materials testing.
In teaching, we provide education in a wide range of materials science topics. This includes the fundamentals in compulsory subjects as well as various specialized electives. The courses usually comprise lectures, exercises and laboratories. In addition, there are opportunities for bachelor and master students to work on projects, student research projects and final theses. Further information can be found on the introductory page of the institutes teaching programme (in German).
