What are the Interdisciplinary Weeks?

  • The Interdisciplinary Weeks (IDW) extend over a period of two weeks. They begin each semester about six weeks after the start of lectures. This year, the IDW will take place from 01 November – 12 November 2021. During the IDW, you can simply "get a taste" of other subject areas, acquire knowledge beyond your own subject’s boundaries or develop a completely new set of skills. There are no regular classes during the IDW, so you can take advantage of all the offers. Among the numerous events (workshops, excursions, etc.) there are primarily basic and pre-vocational courses, subject-specific and special topics, language and cultural offers. For some of the IDW events you can earn credit points (LP) which you can have recognised for your regular studies. This semester's events will probably be a mixture of online and in-person courses. The programme on our website will be kept up to date. For participating in the IDW, you will receive a certificate in every semester on which all the events you attended are listed, including credit points (LP) and workload. You can enclose these certificates with your other records and applications. You will also need them for the recognition of your achievements at the examination office.

Where can I find the courses offered during the IDW and how do I register?

  • You will find the courses on offer from 26 March 2021 on the IDA website: ida.fh-kiel.de. You can register for events on our IDA website from 30 March (8 PM) to 18 April 2021 (23.59) by logging in with your ...@student.fh-kiel.de-address and the corresponding password.

How can I earn credit points in the Interdisciplinary Weeks?

  • Depending on time and workload, credit points (LP) are awarded for some events. After confirming your participation and/or possibly submitting proof of an additional examination, we will credit you with these points. This happens together with the issuing of certificates. It usually takes until the end of the semester for all participants to be checked. You will then be notified by email. It is important that you sign the attendance list at the end of the event, as this serves as proof of participation. Note: To convert your accumulated credit points into an (interdisciplinary) module, you must present the certificates to your examination office once you have accumulated at least 5 credit points.

What happens if I have to withdraw from a course?

During the registration phase, please use the "abmelden" button. After the end of the registration phase, please notify the IDW Office by e-mail as soon as possible. Please give a reason for your cancellation and use your student e-mail address! Please bear in mind that other students may be denied the opportunity to participate if you do not cancel your registration. If you do not attend an event without cancelling your registration, you may be banned from the following IDW under certain conditions and won’t be allowed to participate in any of the events.

The ZSIK ensures needs-based language training for all degree programmes, prepares German & international students in terms of language and intercultural matters for study stays abroad or in Germany and provides them with further qualifications. The following languages are taught by native speakers each semester: English (levels B1-C2); Spanish (A1 - C1), French (A1 - C1), German as a foreign language (A1 - C1), Arabic, Chinese, Danish, Norwegian, Polish, Russian, Swedish and Turkish (from A1=beginners). Who is allowed to take a language course?

  • The language courses at ZSIK are open to all students at Kiel UAS. Since our capacity is limited, we unfortunately cannot accept students from other universities.

What do the language courses cost?

  • All courses and workshops of the ZSIK (e.g. during the Interdisciplinary Weeks) are free of charge for students.

How do I register?

  • For courses with a placement test: After the placement test (from 19 – 23 October 2020), which you can take online without registering, you will be placed in a course that is suitable in terms of language and time.

For courses without a placement test: Registration via the "Module database" portal from 28 September 2020.

How large are the courses?

  • As a rule, 10 to 20 students take part in the language courses offered by the ZSKI.

What levels are offered?

  • English courses are offered from level B1 up to level C2 every semester. Some of the English courses last 2 semesters. You must pass Part 1 (attendance and written exam) before you are allowed to take Part 2. French and Spanish are offered from the beginner’s level A1 up to C1 and also in special certificate courses. As for Arabic, Chinese, Danish, Norwegian, Swedish, Turkish, Russian and Polish, all of these languages are offered at beginner’s level A1 and partly at the more advanced level A2. In German as a foreign language, classes are offered for beginners up to level C1. The classification of our language courses is based on the Common European Framework of Reference.

What do I have to do to pass a course?

  • At least 80% attendance and active participation are required in all language courses. At the end of the semester, you will usually take a written exam or you will have to complete another kind of test successfully. You must register for the exam in advance via the online portal QIS by the respective deadline.

Will my language course grades count towards my degree?

  • That depends on your degree programme. In most degree programmes, language courses are not part of the curriculum and are considered to be optional subjects studied on a voluntary basis or they can be credited with a maximum of 10 credit points as part of the "Interdisciplinary Achievements". If this option does not apply, you can receive a certificate from us stating the length, level and grade (percentage) of the language course after you have passed the course. In some degree programmes, however, the grade is included directly in your transcript of records if the language course is a compulsory subject. To be sure, please inquire at your faculty’s examination office.
