New construction for the library learning centre
Project description
The Berlin architecture firm B+p Reiner Becker GmbH has completed its conceptional planning for the library learning centre. The executive planning is currently active. The new construction forms a campus centre with working spaces for students and all the university’s media inventory.
The existing solitary constructions at the Sokratesplatz will be complemented by another four-storey building with square layout. Situated directly at the main axis of access at the campus, it completes the urban design to the north.
The new building is to express openness and communication – the ground floor with its entrances, passages and a cafeteria is considered as an extension of the exterior space and a “distributor” on the inside.
The central atrium initiates the main vertical development and not only connects all floors but due to its open construction also allows more visibility across all floors. The wide flights of stairs allow space for encounters and seating surfaces provide an inviting environment.
Working areas with various functions (single, group and PC work places and reading spaces) and the library itself surround the atrium over several floors. The rooftop terrace at the top allows views in every direction.
Initially, the construction work should have started in May 2019, but the difficult ground conditions required a specific procedure in order to guarantee the absence of explosive ordnance. For this reason, the project has a delay of approximately 6 months. The finalisation of the project is expected at the end of 2021 or at the beginning of 2022.
